How is this medication used?

Apply acyclovir cream to the affected area five times a day for four days. Use enough cream to cover the cold sores or the tingly area. Start treatment at the first sign of a cold sore for the best results. Continue using it for the full time prescribed, even if symptoms disappear after a few days.

What are the possible side effects?

The most common side effects of acyclovir cream include mild pain, burning, or stinging at the application site. Others may experience itching or redness. Contact your doctor if you experience severe discomfort or signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
