Alendronate is a bisphosphonate medication used to prevent and treat osteoporosis by increasing bone density and reducing the chance of fracture. It works by inhibiting bone resorption by osteoclasts, cells that break down bone.

How is this medication used?

Alendronate is typically taken orally once a week, preferably in the morning at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking any other medication. It should be taken with a full glass of water to avoid irritation of the esophagus. Patients should remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include abdominal pain, acid reflux, nausea, and constipation. Rare but serious side effects may include jaw osteonecrosis, unusual fractures of the femur, and esophageal ulcers.

What are the potential interactions?

Alendronate can interact with calcium supplements, antacids, and other medications that affect the stomach or esophagus. It can also have interactions with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which may increase the risk of stomach ulcers.
