Amitiza (lubiprostone) is a prescription medication used to treat chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults. It works by increasing the secretion of fluid in your intestines to help make it easier to pass stools.

Amitiza should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The usual dose for adults with chronic idiopathic constipation is 24 micrograms (mcg) taken twice a day with food and water. For IBS-C, the typical dose is 8 mcg taken twice a day with food and water. Do not exceed the recommended dosage without consulting your doctor.

Common side effects of Amitiza include nausea, diarrhea, headache, abdominal pain, and bloating. Serious side effects may include difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe diarrhea, and unusual changes in mood or behavior. Amitiza may interact with certain medications such as diphenylheptane opioids (a type of pain medication), which could reduce its effectiveness.
