Aromasin (exemestane) is an aromatase inhibitor used to treat hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It works by lowering estrogen levels in the body, which can slow or stop the growth of breast cancer cells that need estrogen to grow.

How is this medication used?

Take one 25mg tablet by mouth once daily after a meal, at approximately the same time each day. Continue taking Aromasin for as long as your doctor prescribes, which is often several years as part of adjuvant therapy.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include hot flashes, joint or muscle pain, fatigue, headache, nausea, increased sweating, and difficulty sleeping. Long-term use may reduce bone mineral density, so your doctor may monitor your bone health.

What are the potential interactions?

Aromasin should not be taken with estrogen-containing medications, as they can interfere with its action. Strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampicin, carbamazepine, and St. John's Wort may lower exemestane levels. Tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you take.
