Atrovent HFA is a prescription inhalation medication used to prevent bronchospasm or narrowing of the airways in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It contains a bronchodilator called ipratropium bromide, which works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and you can breathe more easily.

How is this medication used?

Atrovent HFA should be used according to your doctor's instructions. Generally, it is inhaled orally four times a day. Patients are advised to shake the inhaler well for at least 10 seconds before each use. It is important to inhale the medication by breathing in slowly and deeply. If you are using other inhalers at the same time, wait at least 1 minute between the use of each medication.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include headache, dizziness, cough, dry mouth, gastrointestinal discomfort, and irritation of the throat. Some people may experience more serious side effects such as eye pain, blurred vision, difficulty urinating, or an allergic reaction characterized by itching, rash, or swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue.

What are the potential interactions?

Atrovent HFA can interact with other medications, so it is important to inform your doctor about all prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements you are taking. Specifically, it may interact with other anticholinergic drugs (which can increase the risk of side effects), beta-agonists, and drugs used to treat Parkinson's disease. Avoid exposure to allergens and irritants that can worsen your condition.
