Caduet is a combination medication that contains two active ingredients, amlodipine and atorvastatin. Amlodipine belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump and reducing its workload. Atorvastatin belongs to a group of drugs known as statins. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Caduet is used to treat conditions caused by hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), and to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in individuals with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors.
How is this medication used?
Caduet should be taken as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The medication is usually taken once a day, with or without food. It's important to take it at the same time every day to maintain an even level of medication in your body. Do not crush or split the tablet. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at one time to make up for a missed dose.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Caduet include headache, dizziness, swelling of ankles or feet (edema), flushing, fatigue, nausea, and abdominal pain. More serious side effects can include allergic reactions (such as rash, itching, swelling), muscle problems, liver problems, and severe gastrointestinal problems. It's important to contact your healthcare provider if you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction.
What are the potential interactions?
Caduet can interact with various medications, which may increase the risk of serious side effects. Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products. Notable interactions include drugs that inhibit or induce CYP3A4 (such as erythromycin, azole antifungals, and certain antiretrovirals), grapefruit juice, anticoagulants, and other cholesterol-lowering drugs. Avoid consuming large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Caduet, as it can increase the levels of atorvastatin in your blood, leading to an increased risk of side effects.
