Cialis is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and sometimes pulmonary arterial hypertension. Its active ingredient is tadalafil, which belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Cialis works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, which helps to achieve and maintain an erection.

How is this medication used?

Cialis is usually taken only once per day. Follow your doctor's instructions. For erectile dysfunction, take Cialis just before sexual activity but not more than once per day. Cialis can help achieve an erection when sexual stimulation occurs. An erection will not occur just by taking a pill. Follow your doctor's directions and the guidelines on your prescription label.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, flushed skin, and stuffy or runny nose. These symptoms usually go away after a few hours. Men who get back pain and muscle aches usually get it 12 to 24 hours after taking Cialis. Uncommon side effects may include an erection that won't go away (priapism), sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, and sudden hearing decrease or loss.

What are the potential interactions?

Cialis can interact with several other medications. It should not be taken with nitrates (medications used for chest pain), certain blood pressure medications, some antifungal medications, and other medications that contain tadalafil or similar substances. Alcohol and grapefruit juice may also interact with Cialis and affect its efficacy. Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure the information applies to your personal circumstances.
