Cyclosporine eye drop is a prescription medication used to increase tear production in patients who have dry eye due to ocular inflammation. It belongs to a class of drugs known as immunomodulators. It works by decreasing inflammation in the eye, which can improve tear production.

How is this medication used?

Cyclosporine eye drops are typically applied to the affected eye(s) twice a day, about 12 hours apart, or as directed by your healthcare provider. Before use, shake the bottle well. To apply the drops, tilt your head back, look up, and pull down on your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Drop the medicine into this pocket without touching the tip of the container to your eye or any surface, to avoid contamination. Close your eyes for 2 to 3 minutes and gently press on the inner corner of your eye to prevent the medication from draining out. Wait at least 15 minutes before inserting contact lenses or using other eye medications.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of cyclosporine eye drops include eye burning, redness, tearing, discharge, pain, itching, visual blurring, and the feeling of something in the eye. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. However, if you experience persistent discomfort, vision changes, or signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing, seek immediate medical attention.

What are the potential interactions?

Cyclosporine eye drops can interact with certain medications and products. It's important to tell your healthcare provider about all the medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions. Specifically, using other eye medications or products without the advice of your healthcare provider can affect how cyclosporine works or increase your risk for side effects. Also, certain systemic medications that suppress the immune system may interact with the action of cyclosporine eye drops.
