Desmopressin is a synthetic analogue of the natural pituitary hormone 8-arginine vasopressin (ADH), an antidiuretic hormone affecting renal water conservation. It is used primarily to treat diabetes insipidus, and also for the treatment of nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) and management of bleeding disorders such as hemophilia A and von Willebrand's Disease.

How is this medication used?

Desmopressin is administered in various forms including tablets, nasal sprays, and injectables. The dosage and administration method depend on the condition being treated, patient age, and response to treatment. It is essential to follow your healthcare provider's instructions precisely.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include headache, nausea, flushing, nasal congestion, and mild abdominal pain. Serious side effects, though rare, may include allergic reactions, significant changes in blood pressure, unusually low sodium levels which can lead to seizures, and water retention leading to a dangerous condition called hyponatremia.

What are the potential interactions?

Desmopressin can interact with other medications including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), some psychiatric medications, and other drugs that may affect fluid balance or increase the risk of hyponatremia. Patients should inform their healthcare providers about all medications and supplements they are taking to avoid potential interactions.
