Dexlansoprazole is a medication used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems such as acid reflux and ulcers. It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. This medication relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. It helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Dexlansoprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

How is this medication used?

Take dexlansoprazole exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken once daily, with or without food. Do not crush, break, or chew the capsule; swallow it whole. If you have difficulty swallowing capsules, you can open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on a tablespoon of applesauce. Swallow the mixture right away without chewing. Do not save it for later use.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of dexlansoprazole include headache, nausea, stomach pain, gas, diarrhea, and vomiting. More serious side effects can occur, including severe stomach pain, difficulty swallowing, and symptoms of low magnesium levels (e.g., unusually fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, persistent muscle spasms, seizures). If you experience any severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction (such as rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing), seek medical attention immediately.

What are the potential interactions?

Dexlansoprazole can interact with other medications such as methotrexate, warfarin, and HIV medications, among others. It may also affect how certain drugs work, such as drugs that need stomach acid for absorption. Inform your doctor about all the medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal products, to prevent potential interactions.
