Emla patch is a local skin anesthetic used to numb the surface of the skin prior to procedures like injections, skin grafts, or minor surgeries. It contains two active ingredients, lidocaine and prilocaine, which work by temporarily blocking the pathway of pain signals along nerves.
How is this medication used?
To use the Emla patch, clean and dry the area of skin where the patch will be applied. Remove the protective liner and apply the patch to the skin at least 1 hour before the procedure. Do not apply more than three patches at once or leave a single patch on for longer than 12 hours.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of the Emla patch include redness, slight swelling, or pale skin at the site of application. Rarely, more serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions, dizziness, blurred vision, or changes in blood chemistry can occur.
What are the potential interactions?
Emla patch may interact with certain medications or substances that affect blood methemoglobin levels. These include sulfa drugs, acetaminophen, and certain antibiotics. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking before using Emla patch.
