Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid. It is also used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis (damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid).

How is this medication used?

Esomeprazole is usually taken once a day, at least one hour before a meal. The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not crush, chew, or break the capsule. Swallow the capsule whole with water.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of esomeprazole include headache, nausea, stomach pain, gas, diarrhea, and dry mouth. Serious side effects may include severe allergic reactions, symptoms of low magnesium (e.g., unusually fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, persistent muscle spasms, seizures), and vitamin B-12 deficiency (e.g., unusual weakness, sore tongue, or numbness/tingling of the hands/feet).

What are the potential interactions?

Esomeprazole may interact with drugs that depend on stomach pH for absorption (like ketoconazole, iron supplements, and digoxin), drugs that can cause bleeding (like warfarin), and drugs that are metabolized by enzymes that esomeprazole can inhibit (such as diazepam and citalopram).
