Estrace is a form of estrogen, a female sex hormone that regulates many processes in the body. It is used to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation. It can also be used in women with ovarian failure and other conditions that cause a lack of natural estrogen in the body.

How is this medication used?

Take Estrace exactly as your doctor has prescribed. It is typically taken once a day with or without food. For treating menopausal symptoms, it is often taken for a prescribed cycle, such as 25 days on the medication followed by 5 days off. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness, headache, or weight changes. More serious side effects can include increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, blood clots, dementia, breast cancer, and cancer of the uterus. Call your doctor if you experience unusual vaginal bleeding, chest pain, sudden vision changes, or jaundice.

What are the potential interactions?

Estrace can interact with certain other medications, including blood thinners, thyroid replacement drugs, insulin or oral diabetes medicine, and some cancer medicines. It's important to tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including vitamins and herbal products. Smoking can greatly increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack while using this medication.
