Estring is a flexible vaginal ring used as hormone replacement therapy. It releases a low dose of estrogen directly to the vaginal tissue to help relieve symptoms of menopause such as vaginal dryness, itching, and burning.

How is this medication used?

Estring should be inserted into the vagina and left in place for 90 days. After 90 days, the ring should be removed and, if continued therapy is desired, a new ring can be inserted immediately. It can be inserted and removed by the individual themselves following the instructions provided by their healthcare provider.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include vaginal discharge, vaginal discomfort, yeast infection, and headache. Less common but more serious side effects can include blood clots, stroke, cancer of the uterus or breasts, and dementia.

What are the potential interactions?

Estring may interact with other medications metabolized by liver enzymes, such as certain anticonvulsants and protease inhibitors. It's important to inform healthcare providers of all medications and supplements being taken to avoid potential interactions.
