Forteo (teriparatide) is a prescription medication used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men at high risk for fracture, and to increase bone mass in men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis at high risk of fracture. Forteo is a form of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and works by increasing bone mineral density and bone strength, which may prevent future fractures.

How is this medication used?

Forteo is administered as a daily injection under the skin (subcutaneously). The typical dose is 20 micrograms once a day. It is usually injected in the thigh or abdomen. Do not use Forteo if the solution is cloudy, discolored, or has particles in it. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions for use and dosing.

What are the possible side effects?

Some common side effects of Forteo include nausea, headache, dizziness, leg cramps, and injection site reactions such as pain or swelling. More serious side effects can occur, including an increased risk of osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Patients with Paget's disease of bone, unexplained alkaline phosphatase elevation, pediatric patients, and those with prior external beam or implant radiation therapy involving the skeleton should be particularly cautious.

What are the potential interactions?

Forteo may interact with digoxin, causing an increase in digoxin blood levels. It may also interact with other medications that affect bone metabolism, such as bisphosphonates. It's important to tell your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, and vitamins you are currently taking before starting treatment with Forteo.
