Frova, known generically as frovatriptan, is a prescription medication used to treat migraine headaches. It belongs to a class of drugs known as triptans, which are serotonin receptor agonists. Frova works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reduces substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.

How is this medication used?

Frova is taken by mouth with or without food at the first sign of a migraine. It is important not to take more than the prescribed dose and not to take it more frequently than advised by a healthcare provider. If the headache returns after the initial dose, a second dose may be taken 2 hours after the first dose, but no more than 3 doses should be taken in any 24-hour period.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Frova include dizziness, fatigue, dry mouth, feeling hot or cold, chest pain or pressure, and tingling or numb sensations. Some people may experience more serious side effects such as heart attack symptoms or severe stomach pain and bloody diarrhea. Anyone experiencing severe side effects should seek medical attention immediately.

What are the potential interactions?

Frova can interact with other medications, particularly certain antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors), other migraine headache medicines (especially other triptans or ergot medications), and medications that increase the risk of bleeding (such as warfarin and antiplatelets). It is important to disclose all medications, supplements, and herbal products being taken to the healthcare provider to prevent potentially harmful interactions.
