Gleevec
Gleevec (imatinib) is a targeted cancer therapy known as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It is used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), certain types of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), and several other conditions by blocking the abnormal proteins that signal cancer cells to grow.
How is this medication used?
Take the prescribed dose by mouth once or twice daily with a meal and a large glass of water to reduce stomach upset. Do not crush the tablets. Take it at the same time each day and continue for as long as your doctor recommends.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps, fluid retention (swelling around the eyes or in the legs), fatigue, and rash. It can also lower blood cell counts and affect liver function, so regular blood tests are needed.
What are the potential interactions?
Gleevec interacts with many drugs, including CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, clarithromycin), inducers (rifampicin, St. John's Wort), warfarin, and acetaminophen in high doses. Avoid grapefruit juice. Tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you take.
