Ibandronate is a medication primarily used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It belongs to a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates, which work by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone breakdown, thereby strengthening bones and reducing the risk of fractures.

How is this medication used?

Ibandronate is taken orally, usually once a month with a full glass of water. It's important to take it on the same day each month and at least 30 minutes before the first food, drink, or other medications of the day. Users should not lie down, eat, or drink anything other than water, and should not take any other medications including vitamins and supplements for at least the first 30 minutes after taking ibandronate.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include stomach pain, upset stomach, or heartburn; diarrhea; headache; and flu-like symptoms such as muscle pain. Serious side effects may include jaw bone problems (osteonecrosis), unusual thigh bone fractures, or severe esophageal problems such as ulcers. Rare but severe allergic reactions are also possible.

What are the potential interactions?

Ibandronate can interact with calcium, antacids, and other supplements, delaying its absorption. It is also advised to be cautious with NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) as they might increase the risk of stomach issues. Additionally, since renal function can affect the excretion of ibandronate, medications that impair kidney function may increase the risk of adverse effects.
