Ibsrela (tenapanor) is an oral medication used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults. It works locally in the gut by blocking sodium absorption, which increases water in the intestines, softening stool and improving bowel movements while also reducing abdominal pain.

How is this medication used?

Take one 50mg tablet by mouth twice daily, immediately before breakfast (or the first meal of the day) and immediately before dinner. Do not take it in children, and follow your doctor's instructions on duration of treatment.

What are the possible side effects?

The most common side effect is diarrhea, which can occasionally be severe; stop taking Ibsrela and contact your doctor if severe diarrhea occurs. Other side effects may include abdominal distension, gas, and dizziness.

What are the potential interactions?

Ibsrela works locally in the intestines and has few systemic drug interactions, but it may reduce the absorption of certain oral medications such as OATP2B1 substrates (for example, enalapril). Tell your doctor about all medications you take.
