Imitrex Injection is a prescription medicine used to treat acute migraine headaches with or without aura and acute cluster headaches in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs known as triptans or serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists. The active ingredient in Imitrex is sumatriptan succinate.

How is this medication used?

Imitrex Injection is administered subcutaneously. The recommended dose for adults treating a migraine or cluster headache is a single injection of 6 mg under the skin. You should use it as soon as symptoms of your headache start, but it may be administered at any time during a migraine attack. Do not exceed two doses in a 24-hour period. If your symptoms have not improved at all after the first dose, do not take a second dose without talking to your doctor.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include injection site reactions, tingling, dizziness, warmth or redness under your skin, burning sensation, and feeling of heaviness. Serious side effects may include heart attack symptoms, strokes, increased blood pressure, and severe allergic reactions. Please contact your doctor if you experience any severe side effects.

What are the potential interactions?

Imitrex Injection can interact with other medications, including monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), antidepressants such as SSRIs or SNRIs, and other migraine headache medicines. Use of Imitrex within 24 hours of treatment with ergotamine-containing or ergot-type medications (like dihydroergotamine or methysergide) is contraindicated. Because it can raise blood pressure, caution is advised when using it with other drugs that can increase blood pressure. Always inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
