Lansoprazole is a type of medication known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is commonly used to treat and prevent stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

How is this medication used?

Lansoprazole is usually taken once daily, before eating. For the medication to work properly, it should be taken as directed by your healthcare provider. The capsule should not be crushed or chewed, and for those who have difficulty swallowing, the capsule can be opened and the contents sprinkled on a tablespoon of applesauce, swallowed immediately, without chewing.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of lansoprazole include headache, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation. Rare but more serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, liver damage, and a condition called Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, caused by an infection. Long-term use of lansoprazole may increase the risk of bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, and low magnesium levels.

What are the potential interactions?

Lansoprazole can interact with certain medications, reducing their effectiveness or increasing side effects. These include drugs such as certain antifungals (like ketoconazole), methotrexate, HIV/AIDS medications, and warfarin. It may also interact with clopidogrel, reducing its effectiveness. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are taking to prevent potential drug interactions.
