Latanoprost

How is this medication used?

Latanoprost is typically administered as an eye drop to the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Ensure hands and the dropper are clean to avoid contamination. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, including the eye. After application, close the eye and press gently on the corner of the eye (near the nose) for about one minute to minimize systemic absorption.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Latanoprost include eye redness, changes in eyelash number, length, color, or thickness, eye itching, and darkening of the iris color. Rarely, it can cause eye pain, suspected eye infection (characterized by eye pain, light sensitivity, vision changes), or respiratory symptoms.

What are the potential interactions?

Latanoprost can interact with other eye medications, especially those containing thimerosal, a preservative that might form precipitates with Latanoprost. It's important to consult a healthcare provider about all medications currently being used, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. The effects of Latanoprost may be diminished by some systemic prostaglandin inhibitors.
