Levodopa / Carbidopa

How is this medication used?

Take levodopa/carbidopa orally as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 3 to 4 times a day. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may help to decrease nausea. However, high-protein meals may delay the absorption and effectiveness of the drug. It's important to take this medication regularly at the same times each day to maintain a steady level in your bloodstream.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, lightheadedness, lowered blood pressure, dizziness, blurred vision, drowsiness, dry mouth, and difficulty sleeping. Severe side effects may include hallucinations, severe mood changes, unusual strong urges (such as increased gambling or sexual urges), and muscle stiffness. Notify your doctor if you experience severe side effects or if your symptoms do not improve.

What are the potential interactions?

Levodopa/carbidopa can interact with several other medications, which can affect how it works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Do not take MAO inhibitors with this medication. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products. Avoid taking high-protein diets or supplements, as they can interfere with the drug's absorption.
