Levothyroxine is a medication used to treat an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery. Having enough thyroid hormone is important for maintaining normal mental and physical activity.

How is this medication used?

Levothyroxine is taken by mouth once daily on an empty stomach, ideally 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast. The dosage is based on your age, weight, medical condition, laboratory test results, and response to treatment. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Do not stop taking this medication without first consulting with your doctor. Thyroid replacement treatment is usually taken for life.

What are the possible side effects?

Possible side effects include increased appetite, weight loss, heat sensitivity, excessive sweating, mood swings, fatigue, hair loss, and shaking. If you experience chest pain, increased heart rate, palpitations, shortness of breath, tremors, swelling in your ankles/feet, or seizures, contact your doctor immediately as these may be signs of too high a dose.

What are the potential interactions?

Certain medications can have interactions with levothyroxine, such as antacids, calcium and iron supplements, which can decrease its absorption. Other medications like warfarin and digoxin can have their effects altered by levothyroxine. It's important to inform your doctor of all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking to properly manage possible interactions.
