How is this medication used?

Losartan is taken by mouth, usually once or twice a day as directed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food. It's important to take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day. Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often than prescribed.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of losartan include dizziness, light-headedness, and nasal congestion. You may also experience muscle cramps or weakness, persistent cough, or an increase in potassium levels which could exhibit symptoms like irregular heartbeat or changes in the amount of urine. Rarely, losartan can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure.

What are the potential interactions?

Losartan can interact with drugs like rifampin and fluconazole, which may affect how losartan works. It can also interact with lithium leading to an increase in lithium's effects and side effects. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen may reduce the effectiveness of losartan in lowering blood pressure. Additionally, losartan can increase potassium levels, so it’s important to avoid potassium supplements and salt substitutes containing potassium without consulting your doctor.
