Metformin XR
Metformin XR (extended release) is a first-line oral medication for type 2 diabetes. It works by decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin, and the extended-release form allows once-daily dosing with fewer stomach side effects.
How is this medication used?
Take the prescribed dose by mouth once daily with your evening meal, swallowing the tablet whole without crushing or chewing. Your doctor may increase the dose gradually to minimize stomach upset. You may occasionally notice the empty tablet shell in your stool, which is normal.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, gas, and stomach discomfort, which usually improve over time. Long-term use can lower vitamin B12 levels. A rare but serious risk is lactic acidosis, particularly in people with kidney problems; seek help for unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, or severe fatigue.
What are the potential interactions?
Alcohol increases the risk of lactic acidosis and low blood sugar. Certain medications, including some diuretics, corticosteroids, and contrast dyes used for imaging scans, can affect kidney function or blood sugar. Tell your doctor about all medications you take and before any imaging procedures using contrast.
