Metoprolol is a type of medication known as a beta-blocker. It is used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain (angina), and other heart-related conditions. It can also be prescribed to improve survival after a heart attack. Metoprolol works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body, such as epinephrine, on the heart and blood vessels. This effect lowers the heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

How is this medication used?

Metoprolol is taken by mouth, usually once or twice daily or as directed by your healthcare provider. It should be taken with or right after a meal to increase absorption and decrease the risk of stomach upset. Do not crush, chew, or break the extended-release tablets; swallow them whole. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, tiredness, or nausea as your body adjusts to the medication. More serious side effects are rare but can occur, such as very slow heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, blue fingers/toes, trouble breathing, new or worsening symptoms of heart failure like swelling ankles/feet, severe tiredness, shortness of breath, unexplained or sudden weight gain, or mental/mood changes like confusion, mood swings, depression.

What are the potential interactions?

Metoprolol can interact with a variety of drugs including other blood pressure medications, drugs for heart rhythm disorders, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and certain anesthetics. It also can interact with substances that affect heart rate and blood pressure, such as alcohol, antihistamines, and medications for asthma or respiratory conditions. Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
