How is this medication used?

Mirtazapine is usually taken once daily at bedtime, with or without food. Dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. It's important to follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of mirtazapine include drowsiness, dizziness, increased appetite, weight gain, dry mouth, and constipation. Less common side effects can include confusion, agitation, and changes in mood or behavior. Severe side effects should be reported to a doctor immediately, which include but are not limited to rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.

What are the potential interactions?

Mirtazapine can interact with a variety of medications including but not limited to MAO inhibitors (e.g., isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, safinamide, selegiline, tranylcypromine), alcohol, and drugs that cause drowsiness such as opioids, antihistamines, and benzodiazepines. Inform your doctor about all medications you use, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal products.
