How is this medication used?

Take nifedipine ER exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The medication is usually taken by mouth, with or without food. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it. Your dosage will depend on your medical condition and response to treatment. Take it at the same time each day for the best effect.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of nifedipine ER include headache, flushing, dizziness, weakness, swelling of the ankles/feet, and nausea. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Serious side effects can include fainting, very fast or very slow heartbeat, or symptoms of heart failure (such as swelling ankles, tiredness, and difficulty breathing). What are the potential interactions?

Nifedipine ER can interact with other medications such as other blood pressure medications, certain antibiotics and antifungal drugs, and medications containing digoxin or quinidine. Alcohol can also interact with nifedipine and increase its blood pressure-lowering effects. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can also interact with nifedipine, leading to potentially dangerous effects.
