Nystatin Oral Suspension
Nystatin oral suspension is a liquid antifungal medication used to treat candidiasis (thrush) in the mouth and throat. It works by binding to the fungal cell membrane, causing the fungus to leak and die, and acts locally without being significantly absorbed into the body.
How is this medication used?
Shake the bottle well, then place the prescribed amount in the mouth, swishing it around all areas for as long as possible before swallowing, usually four times daily. Continue treatment for at least 48 hours after symptoms resolve, and complete the full prescribed course.
What are the possible side effects?
Side effects are uncommon but may include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, and diarrhea, particularly at higher doses. Allergic reactions such as rash or itching are rare; stop the medication and contact your doctor if these occur.
What are the potential interactions?
Nystatin has no significant known drug interactions because it is minimally absorbed from the digestive tract. Tell your doctor about all medications you use, and inform them if symptoms do not improve within a few days.
