Ovestin Cream
Ovestin Cream (estriol) is a topical vaginal estrogen therapy used to treat symptoms of vaginal atrophy related to menopause, such as dryness, itching, irritation, and painful intercourse. It works by restoring estrogen locally to the vaginal tissue with minimal absorption into the bloodstream.
How is this medication used?
Insert one applicator dose into the vagina once daily, preferably at bedtime, for the first few weeks, then reduce to a maintenance dose of one application about twice a week as directed by your doctor. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects include local irritation, itching, or burning, and occasionally breast tenderness or spotting. These often settle as treatment continues; report any unusual vaginal bleeding to your doctor promptly.
What are the potential interactions?
Because absorption into the bloodstream is low, significant drug interactions are unlikely, but medications that induce liver enzymes (certain anticonvulsants and antibiotics, St. John's Wort) could theoretically affect estrogen levels. Tell your doctor about all medications you use.
