How is this medication used?

Apply Oxsoralen lotion to the affected skin areas as directed by a healthcare provider. Usually, it should be applied 15 to 30 minutes before exposure to UVA light therapy. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes, and wash hands before and after use. Do not cover the treated areas with occlusive dressings unless directed by a physician.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Oxsoralen lotion include redness, itching, and burning sensation at the application site. Increased sensitivity to sunlight, blistering, and peeling of the skin may also occur. Severe reactions can involve blistering, intense swelling, and dermatitis. Long-term use can increase the risk of skin cancer.

What are the potential interactions?

Oxsoralen lotion can interact with certain medications and substances that increase skin sensitivity to light, such as tetracyclines, thiazide water pills, sulfa drugs, and certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Patients should avoid using other topical products on the treated areas unless specifically directed by their healthcare provider. Consumption of certain foods that may increase photosensitivity, like limes, figs, parsley, and parsnips, should also be moderated.
