Pravastatin is a prescription medication belonging to a group of drugs known as statins or HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. It is used to lower levels of bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL). It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Pravastatin is used to reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, and to treat high cholesterol and other conditions as determined by a healthcare provider.

How is this medication used?

Pravastatin is usually taken once a day, with or without food. The dosage depends on the patient's medical condition, response to treatment, age, and other medications they may be taking. It's important to follow your doctor's instructions closely. Consistency in taking the medication at the same time every day is recommended for the best effect. Do not increase or decrease the dose or stop taking this medication without consulting your healthcare provider.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of pravastatin include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and rash. Although it is rare, pravastatin can cause muscle problems (which can rarely lead to a very serious condition called rhabdomyolysis with kidney failure). This medication may also increase blood sugar, and thus, may have an effect on patients with diabetes. It's important to report any unusual symptoms or side effects to a healthcare provider immediately.

What are the potential interactions?

Pravastatin can interact with a variety of other medications, increasing the risk of serious side effects. Especially, it should not be taken with certain other cholesterol-lowering medications such as fibrates and niacin, or certain antibiotics and antifungals without medical advice. Alcohol and grapefruit juice may also interact with pravastatin, affecting its effectiveness or increasing side effects. Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal products.
