Procrit
Procrit (epoetin alfa) is an injectable medication that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. It is used to treat anemia caused by chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy, or zidovudine treatment in HIV patients, and to reduce the need for blood transfusions in certain surgeries.
How is this medication used?
Procrit is injected under the skin or into a vein, typically one to three times weekly, at a dose determined by your doctor based on your hemoglobin levels and condition. Regular blood tests are required to monitor your response and adjust the dose.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects include high blood pressure, headache, joint and muscle pain, fever, nausea, and injection site reactions. Serious risks include blood clots, stroke, and heart problems, particularly if hemoglobin levels rise too high or too quickly.
What are the potential interactions?
Procrit has few direct drug interactions, but adequate iron levels are needed for it to work, and iron supplements are often prescribed alongside it. Tell your doctor about all medications you take, especially blood pressure medicines.
