How is this medication used?

Rabeprazole is usually taken once per day, with or without food. The dosage and length of treatment are based on the patient's medical condition and response to treatment. For best absorption, it's advised not to take this medication with a high-dose acid neutralizer (e.g., sodium bicarbonate). Swallow the tablets whole, without crushing, chewing, or splitting them.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and gas. More serious side effects may include low magnesium levels, vitamin B-12 deficiency (especially with long-term use), lupus, bone fractures, and clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. If you experience any severe side effects, including signs of kidney problems or an allergic reaction, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.

What are the potential interactions?

Rabeprazole can interact with drugs such as warfarin, causing an increase in its effect and possibly leading to bleeding. It may also reduce the effectiveness of drugs that require stomach acid for absorption, such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, and erlotinib. Additionally, rabeprazole can increase the levels of methotrexate in the body, potentially causing toxicity.
