How is this medication used?

Risedronate should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider. Generally, it is taken once a week or once a month, depending on the dose and specific condition being treated. It should be taken first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything other than plain water, and before taking any other medication. It is important to stay upright (sitting or standing) for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication to prevent any potential esophageal irritation or damage.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of risedronate include but are not limited to acid reflux, nausea, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, and joint pain. Some patients might experience more severe side effects like jaw bone problems (osteonecrosis), unusual thigh bone fractures, or severe esophageal problems. Contacting a healthcare provider is advised if any severe or persistent side effects occur.

What are the potential interactions?

Risedronate can interact with other medications, supplements, or foods. In particular, calcium, iron, magnesium, and aluminum supplements can interfere with the absorption of risedronate if taken too closely to the time of risedronate intake. NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may increase the risk of gastrointestinal side effects when taken with risedronate. It is important to discuss all medicines and supplements with a healthcare provider to avoid potential interactions.
