Rizatriptan ODT (Orally Disintegrating Tablets) is a prescription medication used to treat migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin receptor agonists or 'triptans'. Rizatriptan works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reduces substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.

How is this medication used?

Take rizatriptan ODT as directed by your healthcare provider. The usual dose is one 10 mg tablet at the onset of symptoms. Place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve before swallowing with saliva. You can take rizatriptan with or without food. If your headache comes back after your first dose, you may take a second dose at least 2 hours after the first dose. Do not take more than 30 mg of rizatriptan in a 24-hour period.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, and pressure or tight feeling in the neck, jaw, or chest. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience serious side effects such as heart attack symptoms, significant changes in blood pressure, signs of a stroke, or severe allergic reactions.

What are the potential interactions?

Rizatriptan can interact with various medications including monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), other migraine headache medications (other triptans or ergot medicines), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and herbal products that contain St. John's wort. Combining rizatriptan with these drugs can cause serious conditions such as serotonin syndrome. Consult your healthcare provider for a comprehensive list of drug interactions.
