Sevelamer carbonate is an oral phosphate binder used to control high phosphorus levels in patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. It works by binding to phosphate from food in the digestive tract, preventing its absorption into the bloodstream.
How is this medication used?
Take the prescribed dose by mouth with each meal, swallowing tablets whole or mixing powder formulations with water as directed. Your doctor will adjust the dose based on your blood phosphorus levels. Do not take it on an empty stomach.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, gas, and abdominal pain. Rarely, serious bowel problems can occur; contact your doctor for severe abdominal pain or persistent constipation.
What are the potential interactions?
Sevelamer can reduce the absorption of certain medications, including ciprofloxacin, levothyroxine, mycophenolate, and some anti-seizure and transplant medicines; these should be taken at least one hour before or three hours after sevelamer. Tell your doctor about all medications you take.
