Sulfatrim
Sulfatrim (sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim) is a combination antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, bronchitis, ear infections, and certain types of pneumonia. The two antibiotics work together to stop bacteria from producing folic acid, which they need to grow.
How is this medication used?
Take the prescribed dose by mouth, usually twice daily, with a full glass of water and with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids during treatment to prevent kidney problems, and complete the entire prescribed course even if you feel better.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and skin rash. Stop the medication and seek medical attention for any severe or blistering rash, unusual bruising, or signs of allergic reaction, as rare but serious skin and blood reactions can occur.
What are the potential interactions?
Sulfatrim interacts with warfarin (increased bleeding risk), methotrexate, ACE inhibitors and potassium-sparing diuretics (high potassium), phenytoin, and certain diabetes medications (low blood sugar). Tell your doctor about all medications you take.
