Tasigna is a medication used to treat certain types of leukemia, such as Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). It is classified as a kinase inhibitor and works by blocking the action of a protein called BCR-ABL, which stops leukemia cells from growing.

How is this medication used?

Tasigna should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider. It is usually taken twice daily, about 12 hours apart, on an empty stomach. Do not eat for at least 2 hours before and 1 hour after taking the medication. Swallow the capsules whole with water and do not break, crush, or chew them.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of Tasigna may include headache, nausea, fatigue, rash, itching, and cough. More serious side effects can occur and may include heart problems, liver issues, low blood cell counts, and bleeding. Patients should report any symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or jaundice to their doctor immediately.

What are the potential interactions?

Tasigna can interact with other medications, potentially affecting how it functions or increasing risk of serious side effects. Drugs that affect liver enzymes like CYP3A4 can alter Tasigna's effectiveness. Avoid using St. John's Wort, ketoconazole, and certain antacids while on Tasigna. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can also interact with this medication and should be avoided. Discuss all medications and supplements with a healthcare provider before starting Tasigna.
