Travoprost eye drops are a prescription medication used for reducing elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It belongs to a class of medications known as prostaglandin analogs. Travoprost works by increasing the outflow of aqueous fluid from the eyes to lower pressure.

How is this medication used?

Wash hands before use. Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the pouch. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Try not to blink and do not rub your eye. Repeat these steps if your dose is more than one drop. Follow the prescribed dosage schedule strictly and use at the same time each day to maintain its effect.

What are the possible side effects?

The common side effects include blurred vision, redness of the eye, feeling of something in the eye, changes in eyelash growth, eye itching, or stinging. Although most of the side effects are mild and temporary, severe side effects such as eye pain/swelling, extreme sensitivity to light, or vision changes should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately.

What are the potential interactions?

Before using travoprost, inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal products. Travoprost can interact with other eye drops that contain thimerosal, causing a precipitation of the medication when applied simultaneously. Wait at least 5 minutes before applying other eye medications. Be cautious of potential interactions with other drugs affecting blood pressure or drugs altering intraocular pressure.
