Uceris (budesonide) is an extended-release corticosteroid available as tablets for mild to moderate ulcerative colitis and as a rectal foam for distal ulcerative colitis. It delivers steroid medication directly to the inflamed areas of the colon, reducing inflammation with fewer whole-body side effects.

How is this medication used?

For tablets, take 9mg by mouth once daily in the morning for up to 8 weeks, swallowing the tablet whole without crushing or chewing. For rectal foam, use as directed, typically twice daily for two weeks then once daily for four weeks.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include headache, nausea, decreased blood cortisol, abdominal pain, and fatigue. Corticosteroid effects such as mood changes, sleep disturbance, acne, and increased infection risk are possible but less frequent than with conventional steroids.

What are the potential interactions?

Avoid grapefruit juice, which increases budesonide absorption. CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, and ritonavir can raise budesonide levels and side effects. Tell your doctor about all medications you take.
