Xifaxan, with the generic name rifaximin, is an antibiotic that fights bacterial infection only in the intestines. It is primarily used to treat travelers' diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli in adults and children at least 12 years old. It is also used to reduce the risk of worsened brain function, or hepatic encephalopathy, in adults with liver failure. Brain function can be affected when the liver can't remove toxins from the blood.

How is this medication used?

Xifaxan should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. For travelers' diarrhea, it is typically taken for 3 days. For hepatic encephalopathy, it may be taken on a long-term basis to prevent recurrence. The tablets should be swallowed whole with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness, abnormal liver function tests, and an urge to defecate. Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe skin reactions, and diarrhea that is watery or bloody.

What are the potential interactions?

Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially for antibiotics, antifungal medications, antiviral medications, and cyclosporine. Rifaximin can affect the results of certain medical tests. Make sure any doctor who treats you knows that you are using Xifaxan.
