Exemestane is an aromatase inhibitor used to treat hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women, often after tamoxifen therapy. It works by irreversibly blocking the aromatase enzyme, lowering estrogen levels and slowing the growth of estrogen-dependent tumors.

How is this medication used?

Take one 25mg tablet by mouth once daily after a meal, at about the same time each day. Continue treatment for as long as your doctor recommends, which is often several years.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include hot flashes, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, increased sweating, and insomnia. Long-term use can lower bone density, so bone health monitoring and calcium and vitamin D supplements may be recommended.

What are the potential interactions?

Estrogen-containing products can counteract exemestane and should be avoided. Strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, and St. John's Wort may reduce its levels. Tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you take.
