Imatinib is a targeted cancer medication (tyrosine kinase inhibitor) and the generic form of Gleevec. It is used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia, certain acute lymphoblastic leukemias, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and other conditions by blocking the abnormal proteins that drive cancer cell growth.

How is this medication used?

Take the prescribed dose by mouth with food and a large glass of water, once or twice daily as directed. Take it at the same time each day. If you cannot swallow tablets, they may be dispersed in water or apple juice as directed by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, muscle cramps, bone or joint pain, fluid retention and swelling (especially around the eyes), fatigue, and rash. Regular blood tests are needed to monitor blood counts and liver function.

Imatinib interacts with CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, clarithromycin), inducers (rifampicin, phenytoin, St. John's Wort), warfarin, and certain statins. Avoid grapefruit juice during treatment. Tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you take.
